Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in September and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, the judge said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Background on Conviction

He was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on January 8th, numerous Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, the legal team called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
