A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
